Melting snow from a recent blizzard has turned the cornfields around Littlemore into muddy ponds. That lovely phrase of C.S. Lewis, in Lenten Lands, describes the (not altogether unattractive) desolation of northwest Iowa as it waits for nature’s resurrection.

Anything translated by him sparkles.
